MORE on Ethics - diary entry
This is a post from by diary written 11 November 2020.
I have just completed my MORE form, I am amazed at my level of understanding of what is required for this module, I am positively a better post graduate student now that in my first module. I have observed how It takes longer to get my thoughts down, especially when I have plenty of questions around my research , practice and topics.
Going about my normal daily tasks, I have found myself thinking about ethics, as I continued completing my MORE form and making additions to my research proposal, I questioned ethics on everything.
I recently dealt with a situation at our school where plagiarism occured during our online exams, and the real impact of what the repercussions of that in the world of work, academia and legal, left me troubled. The importance of sharing this with learners in schools is crucial, especially in the social media age where so much information is willingly shared.
On the other hand my siblings and I has a series of meetings to discuss our family trust; issues around ethics and morals came up as we debated and argued on family issues. The fact that we all, at some point differed on so many serious issues that we had always believed were common, came as a shock. The choice to thoroughly discuss and satisfy each other in order to find a common ground was exhausting, stressful and difficult for us all. We quickly understood that even though we were siblings who all grew up with the same very solid family rules and morals, we had over the years developed our own set of rules, morals and ethics. To continue our meetings amicably we agreed and consciously took an approach of openness,no judging, reflection, respect and honesty.
This has highlighted an I issue I find crucial as a leader in my own space, the reality that people cross ethical boundaries all the time to a point were it is the normal,, that individualism, culture, traditions, humanism all weave us into the complex interesting humans we are. Not everyone is moral or chose to have good morals.
not everyone believes in ethics or choose to abide by it.
I guess this topic of ethics and morals will always be evolving because of the diversity of the world and humanism, technology, class and many other factors.
We are living in exciting complex times😁.
